The fork came to Europe in the 11th century from the East and did not have an easy start here. Considered by the church to be a devilish tool, it was not accepted and spread on the continent until the 16th century, and did not take the form of curved three or four tines as we know it today until 200 years later. Fortunately, nowadays you can scoop almost anything you want onto a table fork without being accused of heresy (unless it's fish - if you eat fish with a table fork instead of a fish fork, there's definitely something heretical about it).
