The Pantone Institute's choice for 2021 is surprising not so much for the winners themselves, but for the fact that there are two of them.

The Colour of the Year 2021 according to the Pantone Institute is... Wait a minute, not "colour" but "colours"! It turns out that the colour scheme for the coming year will be ruled by a duo: Ultimate Gray and Illuminating. In plain English, they are simply... grey and yellow :)

Why did Pantone choose these particular colours for 2021? Leatrice Eiseman from the Pantone Institute explains the surprising double choice:

The combination of solid grey with vibrant yellow is intended to express optimism, but supported by fortitude. Practical grey and warm, optimistic yellow form a combination that will give us both hope and the power to adapt to changing conditions. In 2021, we simply want to feel better, lifted in spirit and ready for new challenges.

It's hard to argue with that reasoning! After all, this year has really put everyone through the wringer. We hope it wasn't the fault of the Pantone Institute, which chose Classic Blue as the Colour of the Year 2020 – after all, "blue" isn't just a name for a colour; in English, the word can also be used to describe a rather sad mood. We definitely preferred the Colour of the Year 2019 – Coral!

The Colours of the Year 2021 are so different that even if you don't like one, you might just fall for the other :) And most importantly, even though they come from two different corners of the palette, they work together beautifully – don't you think?

The Pantone Institute – The Oracle of Colours

A renowned fashion house? Or perhaps an association of famous designers? Nothing of the sort. On the contrary, Pantone is an American company in the... printing industry. Since 1963, it has been producing systems used in the printing sector.

Pantone Colour of the Year

For two decades, Pantone has influenced decisions and strategies across many industries: fashion, interior design, industrial design, advertising... The selection of the Colour of the Year follows a long and complex analytical process carried out by Pantone experts, based on current trends and social moods, events, images and emotions – in short, everything that the world is buzzing about.

The Pantone Scale

The colour swatch developed by Pantone has become a permanent fixture in the advertising and printing industries as a benchmark standard for identifying colours. The basic scale contains as many as 1761 colours, each assigned a unique number. The Pantone swatch has enabled the global unification of the colour schemes for individual brand logos.
