What do soda makers bring to mind for you? The bygone era of the Polish People's Republic, when on hot days, a cart with sparkling water and a single glass stood on the street, and queues stretched endlessly? Well, that era is long gone, but soda makers (in a very designer guise, no less) are making a comeback and proudly gracing fashionable kitchens.

A Brief History of the Soda Maker

What is a soda maker?

A soda maker is a device that saturates water with carbon dioxide (CO2), making it fizzy. The name comes from the phenomenon of saturation, which is the process of impregnating a liquid with a gas. The soda water produced this way might not have gone to your head, but it certainly quenched your thirst beautifully!

In Poland, soda makers were most often associated with so-called cart-based soda makers, which offered refreshing sparkling water or water with a splash of juice to passers-by on the streets. In the 1950s, the Soviet Union was the largest producer of such soda makers, and Polish factories later got in on the act, seeing the demand for this kind of 'entertainment' for the people.

Did you know?

Typically, a rubber hose was connected to the soda maker, drawing water from a nearby municipal hydrant. Also characteristic were reusable glasses, which were only superficially rinsed, hence the humorous nickname 'tuberculosis brew' for the drink served from them, and the saleswomen who operated the soda makers were called 'hangover helpers,' because it was an elixir for those suffering from a hangover.

As for home conditions, soda water was most often made in so-called siphons, or rather autosiphons – these were metal bottles filled with ordinary drinking water, and thanks to small, interchangeable cartridges with compressed carbon dioxide, the saturation process occurred, and thus soda water was created.

An Eco-Friendly Solution

Currently, soda makers are experiencing a true renaissance. Old cart-based soda makers are eagerly sought after by collectors at flea markets or in grandparents' sheds, and once restored, they can make a fantastic decoration, for example, in a pub, or perhaps even become an idea for a street business!

Meanwhile, home soda makers have little in common with their street counterparts; they are compact, fit easily on a table or kitchen counter, and allow you to enjoy the taste of sparkling water without creating unnecessary piles of single-use plastic bottles, which is highly commendable!
