Louis Poulsen is a Danish manufacturer, founded in 1874, which from the outset aimed to create a cosy, warm atmosphere at home using the magic of light. In 2024, they celebrate a milestone anniversary – 150 years! Louis Poulsen lamps are miniature works of art, meticulously crafted down to the finest detail and designed by renowned designers to harness the full potential of light, both indoors and out.
Louis Poulsen is a Danish brand that gives light a new, improved shape through its lamps. Since its inception in 1874 in Copenhagen, the brand has been guided by a singular vision (no pun intended):
We perceive light as a material. A material that can be shaped to maintain a balance between light and darkness, form and function, modernity and classicism. In this balance, we create exceptional lighting that transforms spaces into friendly, warm environments tailored to people's needs.

As is often the case, no one expected that a tiny lamp shop would, over the years, transform into a major, world-renowned brand synonymous with exclusive and unique lighting.
It all started with wine...
Yes, we know how that sounds. But it's not about the first lamp designs being conceived over a glass of wine. At the very beginning (in 1874), Louis Poulsen's story began with introducing Danes to exquisite wines from around the world, as Louis Poulsen was actually a wine shop! However, with the wider introduction of electricity, the brand began its transformation into the luxury lighting brand we know today.
When Copenhagen's second power plant opened in 1892, Ludvig R. Poulsen opened his electrical supply shop in the same city. Four years later, Louis Poulsen (the brand's founder) joined his uncle's firm as a salesman, and after his death in 1906, he took over its management and relocated the shop to the centre of Copenhagen.

The year 1924 was a turning point for the brand, as it marked the beginning of a long-term collaboration with one of the most eminent lighting designers – Poul Henningsen. The designer is the creator of iconic lamps based on the PH system, a system of mathematical principles aimed at mastering light in the best and most effective way possible.
Here are the words of the creator himself:
My goal is – through engineering thinking and science – to create light that is pure in form, economical, and simply beautiful!
In subsequent years, the brand forged further collaborations with talented designers and visionaries whose projects garnered highly prestigious awards in international design competitions (including the Danish Design Award and Coup de Coeur). Their work was also featured at Expo 2005 in Japan.

In 2024, we celebrate the 150th anniversary of the brand's founding, which continues to surprise with sophisticated and fashionable design, without forgetting its roots and guiding principle: to give light the best possible shape.

Louis Poulsen moves with the times and thinks not only about beautiful design but also about a holistic and sustainable approach to the entire product creation process. From the first idea captured on paper to the end of the product's life cycle. The brand is involved in many activities aimed at reducing its carbon footprint, improving product quality to ensure it serves us for a lifetime, selecting appropriate materials and rigorously controlling them, right down to community and employee relations.
