Winding and tensioning: you turn the top half of the timer counterclockwise, which tightens the internal spring and stores potential energy. Timing setting: During winding, the knob is turned to set the desired time (e.g. 10 minutes). This determines how tightly the spring is wound. Time lapse: When released, the spring releases energy evenly into the gear train. These gears move the pointer, which counts down the time on a scale from 0 to 60 minutes. Signal: When the pointer reaches 0, the mechanism triggers a small bell that sounds an alarm to signal the end of time.
